EXECUTIVE TEAM
Property Team
The Legal & General Property (LGP) team is currently managed under the direction of Bill Hughes Managing Director (Property). The team comprises 85 people with 40 Fund and Asset Managers. The executive team biographies are outlined below.
BILL HUGHES
Managing Director
Bill Hughes is Managing Director of Legal & General Property (LGP).
Bill joined LGP in November 2007 having previously held the position of UK Head of Real Estate at RREEF, the Real Estate Fund Management business of Deutsche Bank. Prior to that Bill was Deputy Managing Director and Head of Research at Schroder Property Investment Management. This followed positions at DTZ Research and JLW Fund Management Strategy.
Bill is an Associate of the Society of Investment
Professionals, having passed the Institute of
Investment Management and Research exams. He is also
a member of the Investment Property Databank
Consultative Committee, the UK Green Building
Council’s Code for Sustainable Buildings Task Group,
the BPF Policy Committee and a member of the
Property Industry Alliances working group on Real
Estate Investment Trusts. Bill is also the
current Chairman of the Association of
Real Estate Funds (AREF), a member of the Bank of
England Property Forum, a Member of Edinburgh
University Investment Committee and an
Honorary Fellow of the College of Estate Management.
GORDON AITCHISON
Director of Transactions
Gordon Aitchison is Director of Transactions at Legal & General Property (LGP).
Gordon has responsibility for supporting all Funds’ transaction activities both on and off market, advises on the company’s larger investment strategies and establishes new ventures. Gordon sits on the board of LGP and is also a member of LGP’s Investment Committee.
Gordon joined LGP in July 2009 having previously
held the position of Chief Executive at Citygrove.
He joined the company in May 2006 after eight years
as Head of Property Transactions at RREEF Ltd,
Deutsche Bank’s UK property fund management
division. During this time he was responsible for
the acquisition and development of over £1bn of
commercial property throughout the UK.
Prior to RREEF Gordon spent three years in private
practice and nine years at Guardian Properties where
he was Director of Investment.
ANDY BANKS
Finance Director
Andy Banks is Finance Director at Legal &
General Property (LGP). He is the executive
responsible for financial management, risk
management, fund reporting and accounting, systems,
financial planning and budgeting across all LGP's
client Funds.
Andy recently rejoined Legal & General Property in
July 2008. Andy originally joined LGP in May, 1999
and was promoted to Finance Director of LGP in
February, 2003. In early 2007 Andy joined the New
Star Asset Management Group plc, where he spent 18
months as Chief Operating Officer for Property. Andy
was involved with the set up and ongoing operations
of the New Star International Property Fund as well
as being responsible for the financial management
and operations of the New Star Global Property Fund.
Andrew is a fellow member of the Institute of
Chartered Accountants.
MICHAEL BARRIE
Director, Balanced Property Funds
Michael is a Director of Legal & General Property (LGP) with specific responsibility for the Balanced Property Funds Portfolio.
He is responsible for several Client Funds including the L&G Linked Life Property Fund and the L&G Linked Pensions Property Fund, L&G Managed Property Fund, Leisure Fund LP and the L&G UK Property Trust. Additionally, he is the primary contact for new business activity having been part of the team which established the authorised L&G Property Unit Trust in February 2006 and the Added-Value Regional Cities (ARC) Property Fund in March 2007.Michael joined Legal & General Property in 2005 having previously been a Director of F&C Property Asset Management and the lead Fund Manager for ISIS Property Trust and ISIS Property Trust 2. Michael is a Director of Legal & General Property Partners (Operators) Limited.
He holds a degree in Land Economics, a post graduate diploma in Property Investment and is Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS).
PAUL EDWARDS
Director, Asset Management
Paul Edwards is the Director responsible for
LGP’s sector specialist Industrial Funds
including the Industrial Property Investment fund
and the UK Logistics Fund. He is also
responsible for assessing investment opportunities
for LGP within the industrial sector in Europe and
overseeing the current and future corporate
governance framework for LGP’s unlisted property
fund structures. Paul joined Legal & General
Property Limited in 1990 as a Graduate Surveyor. He
became a qualified member of the RICS in 1992 and
subsequently worked as a senior asset manager on the
Life Fund’s West End portfolio until 1994, then with
the external and Unitised funds until 1997.
Paul became a Fund Manager in 1997 assuming
responsibility for the Industrial Property
Investment Fund in December 1997. He was then
promoted to Associate Director in 2006 and Director
in July 2008.
Paul is a Member of the Royal Institution of
Chartered Surveyors (MRICS).
HELEN GORDON
Director, Life Fund Property
Helen is a Director of Legal & General Property (LGP) with the responsibility for the property portfolio of the Legal & General Life Fund, and the Development and Project Services teams.
Helen joined LGP as director in 2003. Prior to this Helen was Managing Director of Railtrack Property Development and, latterly, Group Property Director. Prior to that she had 16 years development experience and was Managing Director of John Laing Developments and John Laing Property Ventures. Helen’s experience of complex property projects and transactions and high level team leadership skills benefit Legal & General Property and the Life Fund portfolio.
Helen is a director of the English Cities Fund, the Central Saint Giles Partnership and a non-executive Director of New Covent Garden Market. She is also a Trustee of the College of Estate Management. Helen holds a BSc in Estate Management and is a Member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS).
ROBIN MARTIN
Head of Research
Robin Martin is Head of Performance Analysis and Research at Legal & General Property (LGP) with responsibility for overseeing in-house forecasting and house-views, the investment process, performance analysis and bespoke in-depth research projects.
Rob joined LGP in October 2006. Prior to this as, he worked for Hammerson plc in the position of Head of Research where he worked closely with the Hammerson Board and Senior Management team on corporate, sector and asset strategies.
Prior to Hammerson, Rob had a two-year spell at the CBI as a Senior Economist and prior to that three years in the petroleum industry. Rob has a degree in Economics and Economic History.
